How do you get a healthy lawn without moss and bare patches?

A dense, green lawn in the Dutch climate rests on three habits: mow often but never too short (minimum 4 cm), feed three times a year (April, June, September) and scarify annually. Moss is not the disease but the symptom — of shade, compacted soil or an acidic pH. Remove the moss without fixing the cause and it returns next spring.
How often and how short should you mow?
- Mow weekly from April to October at 4–5 cm height. Cutting too short is the number one Dutch lawn mistake: it weakens the grass and hands the space to moss and weeds.
- Never remove more than a third of the blade length in one cut.
- First mow in March, once soil temperature passes ~10 °C; last (slightly higher) cut in November.
- In dry spells: raise the deck to 5–6 cm and mow less often. A lawn that yellows in drought is not dead — it recovers after rain.
How do you remove moss for good?
Scarify in April (optionally again in September): the machine cuts out the moss and thatch layer, which you rake off. Re-seed bare patches immediately and feed. Then fix the cause:
- Shade: prune overhanging branches or switch to a shade grass mix.
- Compacted clay: aerate yearly by spiking the turf — essential in this region.
- Wet patches: structural water needs drainage or re-profiling.
- Acidic soil: lime in winter, but only after a pH test (below 5.5).
