Which plants grow well in Dutch clay soil?
Proven performers on the sea clay of this region include hydrangea, hardy geranium, hosta, daylily, iris sibirica, ornamental grasses (miscanthus, calamagrostis), and shrubs such as viburnum, cornus, spiraea and weigela. Fruit trees like apple and pear also do very well on clay.
When is the best time to plant in the Netherlands?
Autumn (October–November) is ideal: the soil is still warm, rain is plentiful and roots establish all winter, giving plants a head start in spring. Early spring (March–April) is the second-best window. Avoid planting in frozen or bone-dry soil.
