Frequently Asked Questions
What grows easily in a Dutch vegetable garden?
Easy wins in the Dutch climate: courgette, lettuce, spinach, carrots, onions, beans, strawberries and herbs like parsley and chives. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers also work with some shelter or a small greenhouse.
Why are raised beds better here?
Raised beds drain better (important on clay soil and in wet Dutch winters), warm up earlier in spring, are easier on your back and suffer less from weeds and soil pests. They are the best format for small gardens and beginners.
How big should a vegetable garden be?
With 4 to 6 m² of raised beds you can already grow plenty of herbs, salads and small vegetables. A productive garden for a family of four needs 10 to 15 m². We advise on the best layout for your space.
