Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in my own Dutch garden?
Often yes — this surprises many internationals. In Haarlemmermeer and Haarlem a permit is required for trees with a trunk circumference of roughly 50 cm or more, measured at 1.30 m height. In Amstelveen and Aalsmeer a permit is only needed if the tree is on the municipal list of valuable trees. Illegal felling can lead to a fine plus a replanting obligation. We check and arrange this for you.
What does tree felling cost?
Felling a tree costs €200 to €800 including wood removal, depending on height, thickness and access. Pruning a mature tree costs €150 to €500. Municipal permit fees (leges) come on top when a permit is required — typically a few dozen to a few hundred euros.
When is the best time to prune trees in the Netherlands?
Most trees are best pruned in February or March, before the new leaves appear. Note the bird breeding season (15 March to 15 July): disturbing nesting birds is prohibited by Dutch nature law, so major pruning and felling are best planned between mid-July and mid-March.
