Hoorn combines a historic canal-lined city centre with compact town gardens and substantial post-war and modern expansion neighbourhoods: Grote Waal, Hoorn-Noord and the Venenlaankwartier around the centre, and further out Nieuwe Steen, Risdam and Kersenboogerd. The newest neighbourhoods, Bangert en Oosterpolder and BuitenStad, have many young new-build gardens that often still need their first complete landscaping. The soil in and around Hoorn is predominantly sea clay, typical of West Friesland. One thing to watch for when felling a tree: on gardens larger than 500 m², a permit is needed once the trunk circumference exceeds 47 cm (measured at 1.30 m height); on smaller plots a permit is only required for monumental trees or trees with an active bird's nest. A replanting condition is sometimes attached to a permit. We check this for you in advance.
