Pleached trees: privacy above the fence line, no permit needed

Pleached trees (espalier-trained screens on a clear stem) are the Dutch solution for privacy above fence height: fences max out at 2 metres, but trees have no such limit. A row of pleached limes or hornbeams gives a green screen at 2–4 metres — exactly where overlooking windows are. Budget €150–€450 per tree plus planting, and one firm pruning round a year.

Planting rules and practicalities
- Boundary distance: Dutch law requires trees at least 2 metres from the boundary (less only with municipal rules or written neighbour consent) — plant your privacy screen on your own side, 2 m in.
- Spacing: 2.5–3 m between stems for a closed screen.
- Season: October–March; larger sizes are planted with anchoring.
- Clay prep: a generous pit with compost, and drainage first on wet spots — a pleached tree that drowns in year one rarely recovers.
- The bamboo frame comes off after 3–5 years once the lattice is self-supporting.
The pruning routine
One firm annual cut in winter (November–February): everything back to the horizontal framework, one or two buds from the main branch. Vigorous growers (plane, lime) benefit from a light second trim in June–July. Never skip a year — one missed season means metre-long shoots and two years of shape recovery. We prune pleached trees within maintenance subscriptions, roughly €35–€75 per tree per round including disposal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my neighbour object to pleached trees?
Not if they stand at least 2 metres from the boundary (or closer with consent). There is no legal height limit as with fences. Neighbours can only act against genuine unlawful nuisance — practically never the case with well-maintained pleached trees at the correct distance.
What does a row of pleached trees cost?
Per tree: €150–€450 in material (common sizes, screen starting at 1.80–2 m), or €250–€600 planted including pit, soil improvement and anchoring. A typical three-to-four tree screen along a rear boundary: €900–€2,200 total.
How quickly do they give privacy?
The leafed framework is at height from day one; the screen closes fully within two to three seasons. For winter privacy choose hornbeam or beech, which hold their brown leaf through winter.
