Garden, Roof & Facade Subsidies in the Netherlands: What Can You Claim?

A growing number of Dutch municipalities offer subsidies for greening gardens, roofs and facades — part of their climate policy against heat stress and water nuisance. Schemes, amounts and conditions vary sharply by municipality and change yearly. The overview below reflects the 2026 situation across our service area; always check the current rules with your own municipality before starting.

Extra tax benefit for businesses: MIA and Vamil
Businesses investing in a green roof or facade can also use the Dutch national Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA) and Vamil (arbitrary depreciation of environmental investments). A green roof typically falls into the category eligible for 36% MIA, combinable with 75% accelerated depreciation via Vamil. These schemes run through the Dutch Tax Authority and RVO and can be combined with the municipal subsidy — check with your accountant, as exact conditions and category classification change yearly.
How do you apply for the subsidy?
- Check your municipality's scheme before you start — some municipalities (like Haarlemmermeer) require an application well before the start date, others (like Heemstede) allow it after installation.
- Request a quote — most schemes require an itemised quote or invoice as supporting evidence.
- Take before-and-after photos — often required as proof for the application.
- Submit the application via your municipality's subsidy portal, potentially alongside the water authority for an additional contribution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I apply for the subsidy before or after the work?
This differs by municipality. Haarlemmermeer requires an application well before the project starts; Heemstede also allows an application after the green roof or rain barrel has already been installed. Always check with your own municipality before starting, so you do not miss an application deadline.
Can the gardener handle the subsidy application for me?
We provide the itemised quote and, after completion, the invoice and photos that most municipalities require as evidence. The application itself is usually submitted by you via your municipality's subsidy portal, since it needs to be registered under your name as owner or applicant.
Can municipal subsidy and the water authority contribution be combined?
In some areas, yes — the water authority for the Amstel, Gooi en Vecht region, for example, adds a contribution per m² on top of the municipal green roof subsidy. Whether this applies to your address depends on which water authority covers your municipality.
