How do you remove weeds without chemicals — and keep them away?

Chemical-free weed control that works is a combination of hoeing young weeds in dry weather, burning or hot water on paving, and — the only structural fix — keeping the soil covered with dense planting or mulch. Chemical herbicides on paving are heavily restricted in the Netherlands, damage soil life, and solve nothing: bare soil always reseeds.
What works between paving tiles?
- Weed burner or hot water: the most effective chemical-free method on paving. The leaf only needs to wilt; repeat 3–4 times a season to exhaust the roots.
- Joint scraper or brush: thorough but labour-intensive; refill joints with weed-inhibiting jointing sand afterwards.
- Pressure washer: cleans, but also empties the joints — creating fresh seed beds. Only with re-sanding.
- Prevention: sweep regularly — tile weeds germinate in the dust layer on top of the joints, not from below.
How do you beat root weeds like ground elder and horsetail?

How do you keep the garden weed-free permanently?
- Ground covers (geranium macrorrhizum, pachysandra, vinca) close the soil — after two seasons weeding is largely history.
- Plant borders densely (7–9 perennials per m²) so the canopy closes by June.
- Mulch open soil with 5 cm of compost or wood chips.
- Hoe young and dry: ten minutes in April saves hours in June.
- Beware weed membrane under gravel: within a few years a humus layer forms on top in which seeds germinate — with roots through the fabric. In planted borders, membrane does not belong.

Can I still use glyphosate in a Dutch garden?
Professional use on paving has been banned in the Netherlands since 2017 and consumer use is increasingly restricted. Beyond the rules: it damages soil life and water quality, and bare sprayed soil reseeds within weeks. Burning, hoeing and dense planting work permanently.
Do vinegar or salt work against weeds?
No — and they are not permitted as herbicides. Salt lingers in the soil for years and damages everything around it, especially on clay. Use boiling water or a burner instead.
What does clearing an overgrown garden cost?
