Winterizing a pool prevents frost damage to pipework, pump and filter — it is not optional extra care but necessary maintenance before the first hard frost. Budget half a day to a full day in October/November for winterizing, and a similar session in April/May to reopen the pool. Beyond that, a pool needs a fixed yearly maintenance rhythm to keep the water clear and safe.
How do you winterize a pool?
- Deep clean: brush the walls and floor and remove leaves and debris, so nothing rots under the winter cover.
- Balance the water chemistry: pH between 7.2 and 7.6, and add a winterizing product that slows algae growth over winter.
- Lower the water level: to just below the skimmer, so freeze-thaw cycles do not damage the edge or pipework.
- Clear the pipework: blow the lines out with a compressor or use antifreeze, so freezing water does not crack them.
- Protect pump and filter: switch off the pump, clean the filter and, where possible, store it frost-free or insulate it.
- Cover the pool: a winter cover or covering shutter keeps out leaves and debris and limits algae growth by reducing light.
How do you reopen a pool in spring?
- Remove the cover and deep clean before refilling, including the waterline where a grease ring often forms over winter.
- Top up the water level above the skimmer and reconnect the pipework.
- Restart pump and filter and let it circulate for at least 24 to 48 hours before retesting the water.
- Fully retest and rebalance the water chemistry: pH, chlorine/disinfectant and hardness — after winter the water is often completely out of balance.
- Shock treatment for cloudy or green water, followed by filtration until the water clears.

Can I leave my pool full of water over winter?
Yes, for most permanent pools this is actually recommended — an empty pool can float upward under groundwater pressure, especially given the high water table common in the western Netherlands. Lower the water level to just below the skimmer, but do not empty the pool completely.
