Designing a villa garden: how do you approach a large plot — and what does it cost?

By Hovenier Hoofddorp · Updated July 19, 2026

Designing a villa garden is a different discipline from a normal back garden: from roughly 500 m² it revolves around zoning (several atmospheres forming one whole), infrastructure (irrigation, lighting, drainage) and a management plan — a large garden without one loses its design within two years. Budget from about €25,000 for a complete villa garden; from about €75,000 with a pool. We design and build nationwide.

Designing a villa garden: how do you approach a large plot — and what does it cost?

How do you zone a large plot?

  • Representative front zone: driveway, entrance, facade planting — crisp and low-maintenance.
  • Living zone: terraces on the right sun moments (morning coffee east, drinks west), outdoor kitchen, lounge.
  • Swim and wellness zone: pool or swimming pond with pool house, sheltered from wind and view — see the pool guide.
  • Green buffer: mature trees, layered borders and hedges that dissolve the boundary.
  • Working zone: kitchen garden, orchard, storage — out of sight, well connected.

Rule of thumb: at most one-third hard surfacing, at least two-thirds green — keeping a big plot cool, alive and manageable for rainwater.

Which infrastructure belongs in a villa garden?

  • Automated irrigation: from 500 m², hand-watering is untenable. A system with its own well and moisture sensors runs €3,000–€10,000.
  • A layered lighting plan on 12V — see the lighting guide.
  • Drainage and water routing: large lawns on clay need profiling and often drains; roof and paving water deserves its own route (infiltration or pond).
  • Power and water runs to pool house, storage and the far end — nearly free during construction, breakwork later.

Costs and the management plan

ItemIndication 2026
Design + planting plan, large plot€1,500–€5,000
Full construction (excl. pool), per m²€75–€200
800 m² villa garden, total€40,000–€120,000
Irrigation system€3,000–€10,000
Yearly estate management€3,000–€10,000

Phased construction — structure and infrastructure first, refinement later — spreads the investment without compromising the design. Every villa garden we build comes with a management plan: fixed visits, one team, the same people who built it. Start with a free design consultation via Villa Gardens & Pools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a realistic starting budget for a villa garden?

For a fully designed and built villa garden on 500–1,000 m², €25,000–€50,000 is a realistic starting point excluding a pool. Below that, phase it: structure, paving and infrastructure first; planting and detail in later stages. A pool adds €35,000–€120,000.

Do you really work nationwide for these projects?

Yes — villa garden and pool projects are planned in consolidated build blocks anywhere in the Netherlands. Our regular maintenance area remains the Haarlemmermeer–Haarlem–Amstelveen region; remote estate management is arranged per project.

How long does a villa garden project take?

Design 4–8 weeks; construction of an 800 m² garden 4–10 weeks, plus pool build time where applicable. We prefer building through autumn and winter so garden and pool are ready by May. One point of contact throughout.
