Building an Outdoor Kitchen: Layout, Materials & Costs
By Hovenier Hoofddorp · Updated July 31, 2026
An outdoor kitchen ranges from a simple built-in BBQ module against the wall to a complete cooking island with a sink, fridge and worktop next to the pool. Price follows that scale: budget €1,500 to €5,000 for a simple module and €8,000 to €20,000+ for a complete outdoor kitchen with utility connections. As with a patio, the sub-base and the gas, water and electrical connections determine most of the outcome.

What belongs in a complete outdoor kitchen?
- Cooking element: a built-in gas or charcoal barbecue, sometimes with a pizza oven or side burner.
- Worktop: stainless steel, concrete or a weather-resistant natural stone/ceramic slab as prep space next to the grill.
- Sink and fridge: for a true outdoor kitchen that avoids constant trips back inside — needs a water and electrical connection.
- Storage: weatherproof cabinets for gas bottles, tools and tableware.
- A covered structure: protection from rain and harsh sun considerably extends the usable season — see our covered structure and poolhouse guide.
Which material suits an outdoor kitchen?
| Material (housing/worktop) | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Hygienic, heat-resistant, industrial look; can show scratches. |
| Concrete (polished or rendered) | Robust, shapeable, suits a modern villa garden well; porous unless sealed. |
| Natural stone / ceramic worktop | Premium look, heat-resistant, stain-resistant with ceramic; higher cost. |
| Hardwood (cabinet fronts) | Warm look for doors and framing; needs periodic maintenance. |
For a villa garden we prefer materials that match the patio and poolhouse, so the outdoor kitchen reads as part of one design rather than a separate add-on.
What does an outdoor kitchen cost in 2026?
| Type | Guide price 2026 |
|---|---|
| Simple built-in BBQ module (no utility connections) | €1,500 – €5,000 |
| Complete outdoor kitchen with cooking island and worktop | €8,000 – €20,000 |
| Premium outdoor kitchen with cover, heating and full connections | €20,000 – €50,000+ |
Water, gas and electrical connections are the biggest unplanned cost if not accounted for upfront. On a new garden build or villa garden project, we run conduits as standard, even if the outdoor kitchen is only added in a later phase.
Where should you position the outdoor kitchen?
- Wind direction: position the cooking zone so smoke from the grill does not blow straight towards the terrace or living room by default.
- Near the patio: an outdoor kitchen within walking distance of the dining table gets used far more than one tucked away at the back of the garden.
- Permits: an open, uncovered outdoor kitchen is generally permit-free; once you add a fixed roof or enclosed walls, the same rules apply as for a covered structure or poolhouse. We check this for your address in advance.
We include the outdoor kitchen by default in the design of a complete villa garden — see our villa garden design guide or request a free design consultation via our villa gardens service. Want to see cooking islands and materials in person first? Visit the showroom of our design partner Sense Garden Experience in Amsterdam — we then carry out the build in your garden.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
An open outdoor kitchen without a fixed roof or walls is generally permit-free, the same as a freestanding barbecue. Once you add a covered structure or enclosed construction, the outbuilding permit rules apply — similar to a poolhouse or garden house. We check this in advance for your specific situation.
Can an outdoor kitchen be used year-round?
With a covered structure and optional outdoor heating, an outdoor kitchen remains highly usable outside summer too. Without cover, it is mainly a seasonal feature from April to October. The utility connections (gas, water, electrics) keep working year-round provided they are laid frost-free.
Can you handle the gas, water and electrical connections?
We plan and lay the conduits during the garden build and coordinate the final connection with licensed installers for gas and electrics. That way you do not need to manage separate contractors yourself — we keep overall project management of the whole outdoor kitchen build.
