What does patio heating cost to run?
As an indication of hourly running cost:
- Gas patio heater: around 0.3 to 0.5 kg of propane per hour, roughly €1.20 to €1.35 per hour at current gas prices.
- Electric/infrared: a rule of thumb is around 300 Watts per m² of patio. A 2000 Watt heater therefore uses around 2 kWh per hour; at a consumer rate of roughly €0.30 to €0.40 per kWh, that comes to roughly €0.60 to €0.80 per hour.
- Gas fire table: comparable to a patio heater, around €1.30 per hour with normal use.
Purchase price varies significantly by brand, output and build quality - for an actual purchase, always get a current price comparison from two or three suppliers rather than relying on a single indication.
What should you consider for placement and rules?
There is no nationwide ban on patio heating for private use in the Netherlands (restrictions mainly apply to hospitality terraces in some municipalities). Do keep in mind:
- Safety clearance from a covered structure or pergola: when installing, account for heat radiation relative to flammable material such as wood or fabric.
- Ventilation for gas under a fixed roof: never use a gas heater in a fully enclosed space.

Can I use patio heating under a pergola or covered structure?
Yes, built-in infrared panels are in fact often mounted under a fixed covered structure. With gas, ensure adequate ventilation, and with any type, keep sufficient clearance from flammable material.
How much output do I need for my patio?
